About

Darcy is a life-long resident of Saskatchewan. Growing up on a farm and attending school in Esterhazy, she first moved to Regina to pursue a Bachelor of Education degree, and later moved to Prince Albert in 2001 where her husband Iftekhar had found work with the provincial government. After a short time substitute teaching, Darcy started her career as a civil servant in Prince Albert, while waiting for a full time teaching position, and shortly after that became a mom to Nadia in 2004. In 2005 Darcy, Iftekhar and oldest daughter Nadia moved to Silverwood Heights in Saskatoon where they were joined by Sonia later that year, Sofia in 2007, and Tariq in 2011 to create a very full and active household. The family motto is, “We will make it work!” and they have always found a way to make sure everyone is able to explore and participate in their passions.

Career

Darcy changed jobs several times over the years working for the provincial government, the University of Saskatchewan, and the federal government, her current employer. While the specific details have changed, her work has always been focused on the social and economic development of people and communities. She is a real believer in the potential of people, and the power of community. Realizing she would likely never return to teaching, in 2010 she began her Master’s degree in Public Administration to fill in some blanks about the career she had ended up in, and learned a great deal about policy, procedure, governance and government.

Volunteering

Since her oldest daughter started school in 2009, Darcy has been an active volunteer in her children’s schools and in the community. She has been on the Silverwood Heights Extended Day board, and the School Community Councils at both Silverwood Heights (15 years) and Marion Graham Collegiate (6 years) in a variety of roles from member-at-large, to treasurer, to chair. Darcy was instrumental in starting the Silverwood Heights Kindercare program in 2014, which eases the burden on working parents and provides onsite half-day care to half-day Kindergarten students at the school. She was also involved for a number of years on the Silverwood Heights Community Association as both soccer liaison and Silverwood Heights School rep. As her children aged up in the soccer community, Darcy went with them and spent 5 years volunteering on the board of Hollandia Soccer Club.

Interests

While her family is unquestionably a ‘sports’ family, playing pretty much every sport out there that doesn’t involve ice, Darcy is personally passionate about the arts, especially literature and music which were her first areas of study. She loves photography, but hasn’t dedicated the time to become ‘good’ at it. Darcy loves to travel and believes that seeing and learning about different places and cultures is crucial to teach us about ourselves. Most of all, Darcy is dedicated to her children and wants to make sure our community a place where we can all thrive in the long run.
